Community Description:

Our mission is to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ through transforming ministry to and with our community and world. Our purpose is to provide dynamic worship, spiritual discipleship, and inclusive community. We have the following committees: Circle of Care, Property, Worship, and Pastoral Relations Committee. We have a choir, dance ministry, and youth group as well. We have about anywhere from 45-70 members and participants who attend church on Sunday. We have African-Americans, Caribbeans, and Caucasian (the percentage from greatest to lowest is in the order typed); we view ourselves as a multicultural church, who in living out our full purpose, will reflect our community. The church is located in Rogers Park which is the most ethnically diverse community in the United States of America. We live in the North of Howard section which is a poorer community presently going through gentrification. Our church houses Good News Community Kitchen and Howard Area Community Center Alternative School. So in order to get to our sanctuary you literally have to walk through the kitchen keeping you ever aware that there are existential needs in our community. Mission Statement of the Church: Proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ through transforming ministry to and with our community and our world. Good News Community Church is a multiracial, multicultural, intergenerational community that is Christ-centered, congregation-driven, community-based and covenant-informed. Worship time is spirit filled and allows for healing and transformation. The community is led by faith in God's desire for love, justice, wholeness and peace for all of God's creation.

Position Description:

This site is a wonderful placement for a person who is motivated, creative, and a self starter. There is abundant opportunity for ministry. The following gifts would be especially appreciated – multimedia development, youth programs and recruitment, topical bible study, creative art forms incorporated in our worship experience, preaching, writing a church manual, curriculum development for junior youth church, grant writing, and stewardship development. The scope for a field placement is broad and can be shaped based on the seminary student’s interest.

Supervisor:

The Senior Pastor is trained theologically with a M.Div from McCormick Theological Seminary and additional post graduate training at Chicago Theological Seminary. In addition the Senior Pastor is a licensed clinical social worker with a private practice who has served a field supervisor for the past five years for masters’ level students. Generally the supervisor will meet weekly with the seminary student to discussing and process field placement goals and current setting. She recalls having taken the following trainings - spirituality and meditation, healthy congregations, and boundaries for clergy. She has also taken a Worship Alive workshop which focused on music as part of the worship experience of people. In addition she attends larger church meetings within the United Church of Christ. She has participated in clergy day for the last two years. Part of her interest and gifts lay in the balancing of spiritual and mental well being. She believe the church best serves people when the entire being (spiritual, economical, mental, etc.) is addressed.

Directions:

From Hyde Park via CTA: Take the Garfield bus to the red line. Travel the red line to the end. When you get off you are on Howards Street and Paulina. Walk a half a block north on Paulina and you are at the church.
